The new work of L&D in the modern workplace

On the previous page we saw how the individual lies at the heart of continuous learning and development in the modern organisation with both managers as well as L&D providing a supporting role. Here is a view of the new work of L&D based around the activities that the place in (the interconnection of) my 4 Ds of Learning (in black within the circles) and shows how it needs to expand to support modern workplace learning (in the coloured boxes around the circles).

All the activities highlighted on the diagram above are discussed in further sections of the MWL 2020 resource, but let us now turn our attention to the technology that underpins modern workplace learning.

The technology to support workplace learning

In What workplace learning currently looks like we showed that the Top Tools for Learning 2019 survey highlighted that the vast majority of tools on the Top Tools for Workplace Learning sub-list are focused around formal learning, ie for designing delivering and managing things for people to learn. However, when we consider the inter-connection of the 4Ds of Learning in the workplace  and the platforms and tools that underpin it (see diagram below), what becomes clear is that there is a need for a mind shift in understanding the technology that supports workplace learning.
At the heart of workplace learning is not an LMS or other learning platform but a social and collaboration platform, like Microsoft Teams of Slack, which integrates with other tools.  Whereas Microsoft now has its own workplace ecosystem with Teams, Yammer, SharePoint, One Note, Office and so on, Slack integrates with many other 3rd party technologies.

This means that enterprise work platforms should be used as much as possible to host and support workplace learning initiatives rather than dedicated learning platforms. This way learning is truly integrated within work.

In summary, there are many ways that L&D can support continuous learning using enterprise work technologies, but as this is new thinking it will be important to establish a new mindset and culture of workplace learning.  This won’t happen overnight; it will take time a you adopt new ways of working with managers and individuals.  It will probably mean working through a a number of steps to give every one time to adjust to their new work and roles. That is the topic for the next page of this resource.
